Avida Land, a proponent of sensible and inspired living, teams up with Kubular, a homegrown furniture design firm from the guys behind graphic design-based apparel brand Team Manila, for Art in Space, a two-week exhibit featuring the aesthetics of creative interiors startingJune 16, 2016 in Avida showroom in Glorietta 4.

The collaboration of these two young urban professional-oriented brands will give birth to expertly curated, yet highly accessible samples of how attendees can design and decorate their own living spaces.

Kubular’s furniture designs carry an industrial feel—wood and steel bent into cubes and grids that are at the same time heavily design-based and function-driven. The design is contemporary, flexible and sustainable, and each piece has the ability to add character to a space.

Avida, on the other hand, is known to provide accessible and thoughtfully designed developments that cater to the tastes of dynamic working millennials.

“We think that partnering with Kubular—a proudly homegrown brand—is a great way to showcase the potential of a space to our shared market. They’re young, hardworking, creative and culturally inclined—they deserve good quality, and they deserve to have access to it,” shares Tess Tatco, Marketing Head of Avida Land.

“We’ll be unveiling never-before-seen pieces just for this show. And what’s more exciting about that is all the furniture we display will be available for purchase. People who come to the showroom can actually bring these home to make their own creative living spaces,” adds Mon Punzalan of Kubular.

The exhibit will also showcase works from Team Manila and Suez & Zapote, an independent space that features diverse applications of art and design through its main medium, silkscreen printing. It will run from June 16 to 30, 2016. For more information, please visit avidaland.com

Beeffalo by Hot Rocks in Antipolo City: Unpretentious. Homey. Flavorful Everyday Comfort Food

Beeffalo by Hot Rocks Antipolo branch
View from the front, right before you enter Beeffalo Antipolo

Beeffalo Antipolo along Manuel L. Quezon Ext.
The great steaks, ribs and wings restaurant, viewed from across the street, on M. L. Quezon Ext.

Your landmark is Antipolo Doctors Hospital. Beeffalo Antipolo is right across it.

Our Family's long history with Beeffalo, formerly, Hot Rocks

Before I go on and write about this favorite steak restaurant of ours, let me just share my family's brief history with them. Back in 2008 (8 years ago), we discovered Hot Rocks, a restaurant owned and managed by husband and wife Louie and Girlie Abad and their partner and good friend Caren Diaz. It was then that I became addicted to their Porterhouse Steak.

With my family, we frequented Hot Rocks inside the Club 650 parking lot (right beside Shopwise), which we learned had a first branch along Ortigas Avenue, fronting Gate 2 of Meralco.

Suddenly, Hot Rocks had to close because of Nuvo City's development. It was as if I had withdrawal symptoms from suddenly not having any Porterhouse Steak. We tried other steaks but nothing was at par with Beeffalo's (Hot Rock's).

Beeffalo's official history: hot-off-the-family-grill

“Beeffalo actually began as Hot Rocks, a restaurant concept that came about because of our love to ‘eat out,’ which in our case, was literally outside of the house,” Louie narrated. “With five kids to feed at a limited budget, we had to do it our way and grill on our backyard to save on costs. Everyone raved about the steaks and the dishes that Girlie would cook. It was so much fun that we would invite our friends who were only too pleased to join us.”
An idea then sparked in Louie’s mind, to open a grill-type of restaurant offering what they had at home and all at affordable prices. That was how Hot Rocks was born in an unassuming, out of the way, hole-in-the-wall location at Autocamp in Pasig City and later in Club 650 in Libis, Quezon City.  The restaurants were a certified hits among people of all ages, including celebrities and politicians who raved about their mouth-watering steaks and Filipino dishes that offered bang for the buck. But when Club 650 closed down in 2012, Hot Rocks grilled their last.
Hello Beeffalo! Louie and his partners ‘resurrected’ Hot Rocks and rebranded and reformatted it until it became Beeffalo by Hot Rocks. Its maiden restaurant was opened in October 2013 along Gil Fernando Avenue in Marikina, far from commercial areas that restaurateurs would normally consider. “ Our location in Marikina was surrounded by unoccupied parcels of land. It was a risky move but something prompted us to do it just the same. And it worked!” Louie enthused. Its success, largely due to the great food at reasonable prices and a homey and unassuming ambiance, led to the opening of a second branch in Antipolo City.

As fate would have it, we rediscovered Hot Rocks, now known as Beeffallo when they opened in Marikina. Since then, the whole family celebrates at Beeffallo on special occasions. Below are IG posts that I and my wife shared during two special days last year.

The new Beeffalo Store in Antipolo City

So, we've really had a long, long history with Beeffalo. That's why when the new Beeffalo store recently opened its doors right at the heart of M.L. Quezon Avenue in Antipolo City, we had to be there.

Fully loaded nachos from Beeffalo Antipolo
For our appetizer, we shared some Fully-loaded Nachos (Php 285). Taco, meat, corn salsa, cheese sauce and cheddar.

It is recommended to start with Beeffalo’s Broccoli Cheese Soup (Php 120). You may also try their Roasted Pumpkin. These two are sure to whet your appetite.

Beeffalo Wings with Blue Cheese Dip (Php 195)

Don't be confused. The sweet dressing is the one with the red, shiny sauce and the hot and spicy is the one without the sauce. People would tend to think it's the other way around - I did.

At Beeffalo, there is an array of other comfort food to choose from. Their equally famous Beeffalo Wings with Blue Cheese Dip can be taken with sweet dressing with the hot and spicy. Either way, you will enjoy wings in their lip-smacking goodness.

What is Beeffalo known for?

If you visit Beeffalo for the first time, don't miss the opportunity to try their Porterhouse Steak! What's with the porterhouse? Well, you've got to learn about steaks and all to maximize the experience. Here's a guide to steaks. Off the bat, you should try it medium-rare or medium if you're not comfortable with too much of the reddish part.

Beeffalo's FAMOUS Porterhouse Steak (250grams is at Php 395, 450grams is at Php 650)

Beeffalo serves steaks that we loved at the former Hot Rocks restaurants in Pasig and Libis. Simply seasoned with salt and pepper, they are grilled the right way that makes all the difference, showcasing the meat’s natural flavor, enough to please even the most discerning steak enthusiasts. Top on the list are the widely popular large-cut Porterhouse and T-bone steaks served with fresh vegetable salad and creamy mashed potatoes made from scratch.

Baby Back Ribs Full Rack from Beeffalo Antipolo
Beeffalo's Baby Back Ribs - Full Rack (Php 765). They also serve Baby Back Ribs Single which is served with Java rice (Php 285).

Beeffalo also stands for the flavorful beef and meat dishes that are their specialties. Peruse the menu and you’ll see the house specialty, Baby Back Ribs. The meat is ‘literally falling apart’ because it is so tender. It is basted with Beeffalo’s signature barbeque sauce, grilled perfectly until that smokey goodness and fall-off-the-bone goodness are achieved. Tasty Java rice completes an order.

Sizzling Beef Ribs in Tamarind Gravy (Php 330)

My new favorite is one of their rice-worthy mains - the special Sizzling Beef Ribs in Tamarind Gravy, the classic Filipino Sinigang cooked and served the Beeffalo way.

Other must-try dishes include the Beeffalo Burger (with slivers of crispy bacon, served with vegetable toppings and fries as sides) and Garlic Shrimp Pasta (creamy linguine topped with garlic shrimps).

A new look for Beeffalo Marikina City – soon!

Louie, Girlie and Caren are happy to share that Beeffalo in Marikina City will soon sport a new look.

“It will be more streamlined and updated while maintaining the charm, the sense of randomness and the vibe that made our restaurant a well-loved one from the moment we opened,” Louie explained. It will still be homey, airy and in Louie’s own words, “planty’. “These add what might be call, ‘magic’ or perhaps ‘allure’ to Beeffalo and we don't want to lose that. But we also would like to improve on some design aspects. There is always room for improvement.” The refurbishment is ongoing and will be revealed sometime soon. Watch out for it.

US-Based Ventura Foods Expands to Philippines, Asia Pacific Region

If you go to a restaurant in the United States there is a good chance that you would be eating a Ventura foods product.

Ventura Foods is a leading manufacturer of custom and branded oil, shortening, margarine, mayonnaise, sauce and dressing in the United States. The company currently supplies many Quick Service and Fast Casual Restaurants in the United States and many other countries around the world. Ventura has since expanded to the Philippines to cater to the ever growing needs of the industry here and the rest of the Asia-Pacific Region. This is welcome news to the food service and restaurant industry, which is experiencing robust growth, and demands high quality products to offer a public with increasingly discriminating tastes. Ventura held a successful exhibit at the recently concluded WOFEX (World Food Expo) in August 2016 at the World Trade Center Manila where clients were able to sample the kind of products the company can offer

Ribbon Cutting ceremony during the opening of WOFEX 2016 last August 3, 2016. (L-R) Anton de los Santos - Sales and Marketing Director – Export Division; Vincent Lao – Managing Director, Oleo Fats ;Yann Kervoern - President, International Ventura Foods; Glenn Lobo - Director of International Operations – Asia Pacific, Ventura Foods; Baven Chin– Sales Director – APAC; and Francis Tan– Director for Sales and Marketing, Local Division.

What makes Ventura Foods different from other companies in the CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) category is that customization is their specialization. “Two-thirds of our business is food service. We are first and foremost a food service organization. We do have a retail business and an industrial business as well, but food service is our primary focus,” says Yann Kervoern, President of Ventura International. “We don't make one product that we sell to everybody. We try to understand everybody's different needs and tailor to their requirements.”

Asia-Pacific was a natural choice in deciding where to expand the company. "One reason why we're here is that our key clients have approached Ventura USA because we are the primary supplier of sauces and dressings for these major companies,” says Glenn Lobo, Director of International Operations for the Asia-Pacific region.“They reached out to us and said, ‘Hey, can you help us make sure our sauces are standardized across the globe?’” It has been the practice of QSR chains that expand globally to use local suppliers in many markets. They had to make do with what’s available because importing those same sauces from the US would be too costly, which would result in a less price competitive end product.

Glenn Manasan Lobo is the current Director of International Operations – Asia Pacific for Ventura Foods. He has been with the company for thirteen years formulating and commercializing different food products sold in the industry.  Glenn received his Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Northridge where he earned a double major in the fields of Food Science and Nutrition.

To be competitive in terms of pricing and quality, the company established a strong local partnership with Oleo-Fats Inc., which consists of the production and marketing of products not just for the Philippine market but also for export throughout the Asia Pacific region, and even the Middle East. “In the region we know we will be tariff and duty friendly and cost competitive, but the same time to be able to make our customer and their customers happy that what they're eating is something similar to what they'll be eating at when they're in the US or anywhere else,” explains Lobo.

The high quality of their products is something the company banks on making them stand out. “The formulation of sauces, dressing and mayonnaise are based on the ones made in the United States,” informs Kervoern. For instance, Ventura makes their real mayonnaise with real eggs vs powdered eggs. This is an important detail because it is a signifier of the conditions of the manufacturing site. “If you only use powder, it could mean you are not able to handle fresh products and not handle them safely in your facility because it’s harder,” says Lobo.“Being able to process fresh ingredients means you have a quality environment. It’s more difficult operationally requiring more stringent conditions.”

Already, this strict adherence to standards is getting an enthusiastic response from clients and potential customers. “Compared to other imported products from other countries, our quality is a lot better,” says Anton de los Santos, Sales and Marketing Director of Oleo-Fats. “We've already received feedback from major QSR chains sourcing their products from Asia-Pacific producers and they're saying Ventura’s quality is very good. They are the gold standard.”

Apart from bringing their obvious expertise to the Asia-Pacific market, Ventura recognizes that the region and the countries in it have their own unique flavor profile that may not always match those in the United States. “We have the ability to adjust tastes to consumer preferences for every country in the region,” says Kervoern. The Ventura produced real mayonnaise for the Philippine market, for instance, is sweeter than mayonnaise they produce elsewhere because this is in line with consumer preference. They plan to take the same approach to the rest of their market. “Taste is important, but in our market of sauces, dressings, mayonnaise and margarine, texture and mouthfeel are other components that are equally just as important,” Kervoern explains. The experience in the US means the company’s area of expertise in products that specialize in both taste and mouthfeel is vast.

Anton delos Santos is the current Sales and Marketing Director – Export Division of Oleo-Fats, Inc. He has been with the company for eighteen years. Anton received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Asia and the Pacific.

This combination makes them a formidable presence in the industry. “We have the know-how, technical capability, quality systems, the production capabilities to delight our customers, and we try to remain fleet-footed and agile in terms of being able to respond to market trends and customer demands,” says de los Santos. Ventura’s presence in the region is growing, and with local production capabilities, they can only expect continued momentum that’s set to match the booming growth in various related and complementary industries such as tourism and casual dining.

Ventura Foods and Oleo-Fats, Inc. office address is at #5 Mercury Avenue, Bagumbayan, Quezon City 1110 Philippines or visit the official website at www.venturafoods.com. You may contact them directly at (02) 709 6536 or (02) 635 0680.

Doing Away with Malodors with Downy #BoomBoomPow

Downy recently hosted a "malodor challenge" by holding a cooking demo with Sarsa owner Chef JP Anglo with celebrity mommies Kelly Misa, Patty Laurel, Chef Jp, Camille Prats, Pia Guanio, and host of the event, Bianca Gonzales, at the Cookery in Burgos Circle, BGC, Taguig City.

Bianca Gonzales hosts the Downy "malodor challenge."

The Downy event was dubbed #DownyBoomBoomPow, following the campaign inviting people to identify the tough malodors they face in their daily routines and prove that the newest Downy innovation is the solution.

Chef JP exclusively prepared several everyday Pinoy dishes which emit strong odors, such as Grilled Vietnamese Pork Belly and Sizzling Sinigang Fried Chicken with Batwan Gravy, plus the special dish of Grilled Bangus with Talangka & Burong wrapped in Banana Leaves intended to really put Downy to the malodor challenge.

After enjoying these delicious dishes, the guests were asked to inspect their aprons for any tough smells which might have stuck to it such as food smell, sweat and smoke. To their surprise, the aprons were as fresh and clean as ever - effectively demonstrating the effective malodor removal and freshening benefit of Downy's best ever formula!

“In Filipinos’ daily lives, they normally face situations or activities resulting to unnoticed bad odors such as body odor, sweat, food smell, smoke, and vehicle exhaust stuck on their clothes. Downy extensively understands our consumers’ concerns and need for fresh scent on their family’s clothes, so we are really delighted to provide them with the best ever formulation of Downy that can help them fight against malodors on their fabrics,” said Louie Morante, Regional Brand Communications Manager for Procter & Gamble ASEAN.

In a recent survey on malodors, the top 10 tough malodors on clothes are the following: vehicle exhaust, cigarette smoke, smoke from burning garbage, sweat and body odor, wet socks, kulob, fried fish, barbecue, garlic, and onions.

Upping its ante in the market, the newest technology from Downy softener contains the breakthrough Malodor Removal Technology which does not just “mask” malodor with aromatic ingredients, but effectively eliminates tough malodors which stick to clothes completely.. This prevents the odor-causing material from being released again. The Perfume Micro Capsules, which are spread and embedded on fabric while washing, will help bring back the refreshing fragrance on clothes.

Together, the Malodor Removal Technology and the Perfume Micro Capsules harmoniously work to help neutralize all tough smells and create longer lasting fragrant smells on clothes every time the fabrics are rubbed.

This innovative product formulation is also complemented with modern and colorful product packaging for all five Downy fragrances – Sunrise Fresh (for quick drying, even indoors), Antibac (to keep germs away for the whole family), Garden Bloom (for wonderful floral freshness), Single Rinse (for quick rinsing with less water), and Baby Gentle (for the safety of sensitive baby skin). Boom boom everyday malodors and power up with freshness with the best ever formula from Downy - now available in supermarkets nationwide.

Change is Here for PHILTA

Last Tuesday, me and my mom went to the Makati Sports Club to attend Philippine Tennis Summit , an event hosted by the Philippine Tennis Association, also known as PHILTA and and sponsored by Cebuana Lhuillier. Deciding to reform the PHILTA, Randy Villanueva, PHILTA's acting president, organized the Philippine Tennis Summit that gathered local stakeholders of tennis and media to discuss the current state of the association and identified action plans towards PHILTA's improvement.

During the Philippine Tennis Summit on September 6, stakeholders, including tennis coaches, players, parents, sponsors, regional representatives and PhilTA officials, among others, along with members of the media, gathered at the Makati Sports Club where issues on Philippine tennis were brought forth. Villanueva, one of the individuals who leaded the gathering, presented the current state of Philippine tennis, citing the need to improve the country’s standing in international competitions, increase the number of tennis players in the country, and attract them to become members of the national tennis association that represents the International Tennis Federation in the Philippines, among others.

Randy Villanueva speaking for the PHILTA

Villanueva laid down the plans for Philippine Tennis Association, identifying a strategy that starts with changes within the existing organization, followed by achievements that will create funding and resources, enable extensive training programs, and make way for a consistent supply of elite Filipino tennis players before reaching the ultimate goal of becoming an international tennis association.

He elaborated that for him to consider the vision of becoming an international tennis association, the country should have at least two Olympians, at least two players in the top 100 of the ATP & WTA rankings, four junior players in the Top 100 of the ITF boys’ and girls’ categories, qualify for the Fed Cup World Group, and qualify for the Davis Cup World, all by the year 2024. Which is around 8 years from now. I am quite impressed by his notions.

When this project is done, I might consider playing tennis. He stressed that to be able to achieve all of these, there’s a need to augment the current set-up of the current national tennis association to make way for positive changes specifically in making Philippine tennis inclusive to many. This will pave the way for more active memberships from tennis players, increase in pool of talents, and make the association more sustainable in terms of funding. “There’s really a need to amend the organization if we are to become a world-class association. The association right now is being run by just 12 people who do not represent any Philippine tennis stakeholders, region or clubs." I was very surprised by the small number of people running the PHILTA. "I think it’s very important that we make it more inclusive to everyone and encourage more participation from the whole Philippine tennis community,” said Villanueva.

Sir Jean Henri Lhuillier being asked a question

One of those elated to hear Villanueva’s vision for Philippine tennis is sports patron and PhilTA chairman of the board, Jean Henri Lhuillier. “It’s refreshing to have this Philippine Tennis Summit and hear the great plans of Villanueva to move forward Philippine tennis. As always, I’ll be here to support in whatever capacity I can to bring to fruition PhilTA’s plans,” said Lhuillier. During the summit, Villanueva also advised that he initiated the event in an effort to uplift Philippine tennis and clarifies that he does not have any plans to gun for the presidency in the organization’s next election and is just happy to be able to lay down the work for whoever will succeed him.

I entered the event as a representative of my dad, so I'm wearing my dad's name tag. My name is not Jeff, don't worry. As I said awhile back, these changes to PHILTA are making me consider starting to play tennis. For they'll be training kids too, not just adults.

Ginny Guanco’s figures for her painting exhibit at the Galerie Y in SM Megamall are what can be described as a Bohemian’s rhapsody. The art show, which features all-female subjects, opens on September 15. Of the 32 colorful paintings of women, 26 of these are clad in classic boho chic designs in a bow to the artist’s roots as a full-bloomed flower child in the 70s.

Even in her growing up years, Ginny’s inclination to art was already very evident. In school, she participated in art contests. It was no surprise that after graduating high school from the College of the Holy Spirit in Mendiola, Fine Arts was the course she chose at  the University of Sto. Tomas.  As an artist immersed in her era, she believed in the message of peace, love, joy, and happiness against a backdrop of rock music and hippie art. “I was also really into bohemian fashion then as much as I am now. I did not outgrow my fashion taste, because I feel that it fits my personality and represents who I really am.”

This artwork, done in 2012, which was originally intended as a form of therapy after the untimely passing of her ginger cat, marks the beginning of Ginny's return to art after a hiatus of 15 years.
Her 26 muses are clad in similar fashion, in flowy and flowery creations and are labeled, alphabetically, after hippie names that derive inspiration from the elements. Among the collection, exhibit guests would meet Aura, Freedom, Lilac, Seagull, Meadow, and Ocean, all hand-drawn in acrylic, in a style which Ginny describes as a fusion of fashion and art illustration. This effect is a direct result of her training as an artist both in the UST and in the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C., along with fashion illustration lessons from no less than the doyenne of Slim’s Fashion and Arts School, the late Salvacion “Slim” Lim Higgins. “I would describe my drawings as a mix of the two drawing disciplines where one features elongated figures for fashion and the other shows a more sinewy effect as in the fine arts,” she describes.

Paintings number 27 to 32 is her homage to the strong women in the comicverse, featuring pop culture heroines from Marvel and DC franchises – Black Widow, Elektra, and the two main incarnations of Wonder Woman. “I have always been attracted to strong female characters, as I was also very much into women’s rights in the 70s. I have always believed that women should be empowered, that regardless whether you are a career woman, a CEO, a homemaker, you should know how you are as a person, knowing your worth, a human being to be respected and not looked down upon.  And one who is secure in who she is.”

The solo exhibit took a long time in coming, as Ginny took a 15-year hiatus from painting, pursuing a career, first in the media, and later on as a public relations professional. It took the passing of her favorite ginger cat, Simba and a few art materials lying around to get her back to art. A post of her finished figure on social media garnered a lot of interest from friends to convince her to take up the brush again. A chance meeting with Galerie Y owner Rollie Yusi, who viewed her works with interest, set the exhibit in motion.  Ginny’s boho-inspired pieces join the gallery’s carefully-curated works by established and emerging Filipino artists as it works toward the enrichment of contemporary Philippine art.

Ginny Guanco’s Boho Chic exhibit will be on view at Galerie Y from September 15 to 24. Opening cocktails are provided by; Chef Jojo Javier’s Sweetielicious, Chef Greggie Mercado of Aging's Food Delight,  Wine Depot, Nestea and Kit Kat, Strategic Works, Inc. and Ginny Guanco. The gallery is located at the 4th floor of the SM Megamall, Bldg A. For more information, contact Galerie Y, open from Mondays to Sundays, 10 AM – 10 PM, or call 634- 2704. Sharks in the Philippines

I've never had any personal encounter with sharks. A big fish, yes. It was back in 2009 or 2010 in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, while snorkeling. The huge fish was scary enough, much more a shark. I feared sharks because of the impression I had from the popular movie Jaws (movie theme playing).

But, with the Philippines as one of the countries in Asia with greatest bio-diversity, including sharks, majority of our waters are diverse and wide enough to support the existence of sharks – so much so that they don’t need to attack people.

Having learned this, I came to realize that sharks in the Philippines need to be protected as well. According to Wikipedia, as classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the following are the shark species that are endangered in our country.

1. Oceanic white tip shark
2. Great white shark
3. Sicle fin weasel shark
4. Snaggletooth shark
5. Tawny nurse shark
6. Whale shark
7. Whitefin topeshark
8. Great hammerhead shark

The Thresher Shark, Only in the Philippines

Monad Shoal near Malapascua Island, Daanbantayan remains to be the only place in the Philippines and in the world where scuba divers can see pelagic thresher sharks almost every day.

With this exclusivity, the Thresher Shark can become endangered soon. But, there is a petition for Threshers at Change.org that will help prevent unsustainable fishing of thresher sharks by having the market for their fins monitored and regulated.

To be good stewards of the gifts that we're given is our call and responsibility.

The challenge is to sign the Petition and Vote YES for Threshers at Change.org.  We can't just stand by and watch our environment disintegrate. Let's all take part in supporting the preservation and protection of sharks that have long been butchered and marketed for their fins.

The proposal will help make sure that no more unsustainable fishing of sharks will happen, through monitoring and regulation.

Yes for Threshers

I've signed the Petition!

Here's how we can make a difference:

1. Sign the Petition and Vote YES for Threshers at Change.org and let us unite in getting our voice heard.

2. Pledging your support to the Thunderclap campaign!

3. Visit Malapascua Island to see the thresher shark and support the community.

4. Share thresher shark posts on social media while using #SaveThresherTala #StoptheThresherHunt #PHsayYes

The country’s number one fast-food chain, Jollibee, recently unveiled its first-ever mobile application called JolliDance Showdown app that is sure to be a hit among Jollibee fans of all ages.

The app was developed by renowned Los Angeles-based mobile innovation agency, Trigger. The agency has produced applications for other clients like Sony Pictures, Lionsgate Entertainment, and Lucas Film.

During the program, the Trigger team shared their experience in creating the app that captures the lovable persona of the dancing Jollibee. Trigger Senior Director of Client Services Natasha Weinstein shared their impression, “Everyone just really loves going to Jollibee. It struck us an important part of the Philippines’ pop culture."

This quick immersion of the app’s designers determined the features and the overall appeal of the app. Trigger President and Executive Creative Director Jason Yim explains the app plays on the sense of community. “Getting friends involved and getting your own avatar involved, that’s definitely the most fun part. You can’t help but smile when you do it."

Going live with Jollibee AR beats
Radio jock Chico Garcia and mom entrepreneur Bettina Carlos, along with her daughter Gummy, were the first to try these features. The experience began by watching the JolliDance Showdown app transform Jollibee’s friendly face on the Jolly Joy Box into a platform. These guests then captured photos for their screen avatars and, after choosing their image on screen, they watched Jollibee and friends enjoy Electro, Pop, and Rock beats.

Other features of the JolliDance Showdown App were also discussed, including unlocking new characters with every visit to Jollibee branches and scanning the Jolly Kiddie Meal promo board located at the store counters.

Yim said, “The app is pushing how we can engage kids with augmented reality. It’s more than just having characters appear. It’s interactive and gives a much deeper experience.”

The JolliDance Showdown App is free for download in iTunes and Google Play Store. Get the app and watch the Jolly Joy Box go live. The Jolly Joy Box comes free with every purchase of the Jolly Kiddie Meal.

Lily's by Conlins: The New Coffee Brand on the Block

For someone who happen to belong in the "Coffee is My Fuel" movement, one of the things that I will continue to appreciate is the discovery of new coffee brands.

One of which is Lily's by Conlins.
Inspired by nostalgia, Lily’s by Conlins comes in three distinct flavours that brim with warmth and sweetness. The Royal Latte offers a rich heavenly brew that’s tempered with a fresh hint of honey. Whether for breakfast or for your afternoon coffee break, this latte instantly helps to perk up your senses. For those who enjoy the delicateness of this Italian favorite,

Lily’s Luxury Cappuccino serves a smooth experience with the same creamy lightness of milk. The final sprinkle of cinnamon on top makes for the perfect relaxing cup. Lily’s Luxury Cocoa, on the other hand, is the ultimate temptation for adults who never outgrew their penchant for hot chocolate. An elevated version of the sweet treat, Lily’s Luxury Cocoa is a dark indulgent cup that beautifully melds the rich aromas and flavors of premium roast coffee. It offers a delightful balance of richness and sweetness that everyone will love. “Lily’s by Conlins is actually a tribute to my late mother.

Eric Lim, the COO of Conlins Coffee Company and licensed coffee Q grader, shares his sentiments on every coffee he creates: “For me, great coffee is an everyday indulgence, and it helps to make ordinary moments extraordinary.” Just in time for the Christmas season, Conlins proudly launches its newest line of premium instant coffee made from special micro-ground roasts - Lily’s by Conlins.

It is after Mr. Eric Lim's late mom, Lily, this coffee brand is named after.

Mr, Eric Lim shared of his mom, "When I was a child, I would excitedly make breakfast and whip up a cup of coffee for her. Of course, it was just instant coffee. But the special, simple act of mixing the coffee with milk and sugar felt like such a grown up thing. Until today, I remember those moments with fondness. Coffee became an opportunity for us to bond.”

Treat yourself and the people you love with a distinct brew that marries the convenience of instant coffee with the luxury of premium coffee blends. Lily’s by Conlins are available in 250 grams tins for Php 350 at Greenbelt 5, Coffee Lab (beside ALESSI) in Bonifacio Global City, and The Coffee Laboratory in Ayala Center Cebu 3rd Level . Extended: "Wings Tuesdays" at Buffalo Wild Wings Estancia Mall Branch Until October 25!

My mom and I recently went to Capitol Commons' Estancia Mall to get a taste of Buffalo Wild Wings'"Wings Tuesdays." Weekdays couldn’t get any wilder because your favorite Tuesday treats are here to stay… at least for a little while longer.

Buffalo Wild Wings has extended “Wings Tuesdays” so you could have your favourite wings at half the price, every Tuesday until October 25 at its Estancia Mall branch.

I ordered their Ultimate Nachos and got pretty excited by the other food offerings. I got some of the Buffalo Chicken Flatbread, one of the Thin Crust Flatbread variants, and it tasted really good! I'm not a fan of chicken (from the time that I witnessed my dad butchered one in Davao), but I must say it tasted good! And then I got some of their pretzels, part of the Tablegating Sampler, as shown below.

If you're into sports, you are going to have a feast of it because of Buffalo Wild Wings action packed-sports shows, while you devour your wings.

The Tablegating Sampler, P795

The Buffalo Chicken Flatbread, P475

I ordered the Blueberry Lemonade while my mom got the Berry Lemonade. You know, just in case you get a little overheated from your wings. Works quite better then water. Seriously.

The Berry Lemonade and The Blueberry Lemonade, P145

Of course, the well-known Buffalo Wings. But this is not like ANY other Buffalo Wings platter, this one has not one, not two, but THREE delicious flavors: Salt and Vinegar, Parmesan Garlic, and Asian Zing. This is only the Medium-sized serving. With wings that are spun in 12 signature sauces and 5 dry seasonings including the house favorite Asian Zing, subtly sweet Honey BBQ, the buttery Buffalo, the tropical taste of Mango Habanero, and Asian flavors infused in Thai Curry — what more can you ask for? I have no idea.

Our Medium-Sized Serving, this one boasts of mild
Salt and Vinegar, a favorite Parmesan Garlic, and a sweet and not-too spicy Asian Zing,
P925

But I do know that there was a small-sized serving with the SECOND HOTTEST flavor, Mango Habanero. A little too hot for me. I can eat kimchi, but Mango Habanero? Go get me a gallon of water. Ice-cold. Or a Blueberry Lemonade. Haha!

A-ha! My favorite of all the Shareable Sides, the Soft Pretzels. But this one has a special second sauce, my favorite, Caramel. Sure, the pretzels taste good on their own, but caramel just makes them heavenly.

Soft Pretzels with special Caramel sauce, P345

Of course there's dessert. There isn't a proper meal without dessert. You need to extinguish the flame of spiciness in your mouth. Sometimes water doesn't do the trick, but dessert sure does!

Chocolate Fudge Cake (Ice Cream Included) and
Classic Cheese Cake, both P325

Swing by with friends and order two large platters of 20 wings. It will only take you back P572++ per large serving. Enjoy "Wings Tuesdays" at Buffalo Wild Wings! It lasts till the 25th, so no worries. And if you’re up for the challenge, get blazin’ by downing 12 wings in six minutes to become a “Blazin Challenge” champion.

Go get yourself a well-deserved meal at the Buffalo Wild Wings with friends. You can even have this treat all Tuesdays of October. Pretty cool, huh?

5 Things Our Family Love About Hyatt City of Dreams

There are so many things to love about Hyatt City of Dreams Manila.

One of which is its being within the metropolis, which translates to accessibility if you happen to have a family that has a crazy schedule like we do.

Here are 5 reasons why we love Hyatt City of Dreams Manila:

1. Distance

We love going on staycations and quick getaways whenever we get the chance but a distant destination is not always feasible for us, even if we want to fly or do long drives whenever. This is why finding accommodations in Manila through online booking sites like Traveloka is almost always what we doHyatt City of Dreams Manila is one of our favorite quick vacation destinations that we look forward to going in Metro Manila.

And because Hyatt City of Dreams Manila is so close to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, three kilometeres away, to be exact, travelers can check-in here to make sure they catch their flight without having hassle themselves with the metrowide traffic, Manila is infamous for.

2. Posh Accommodation

Hyatt City of Dreams is a 5-star hotel, that has a total of 362 full-featured rooms. Rooms range from 36 to 86 sqm with floor to ceiling windows furnished in relaxing and warm shades of mustard, paprika and chocolate.

Our Superior Room's toilet and bath was the bomb! Above is the panoramic photo I took of our posh t&b. It was huge and we totally loved it. One of our fun anecdotes belong to this bath as we found out that our son took a bath in the tub instead of the shower. He so got used to bathing in our bath tub at home that it didn't occur to him that it would be easier for him to bathe in the shower. Haha!

I totally loved the lighted vanity mirror! I swore I was going to get one when I get home. Haha!

Our room had a 42-inch LED HDTV with an interactive interface, safe that can accommodate a laptop and the no less than 300-count linen and sink-into-me pillow. If we had a week to stay in Hyatt CDO, I would have stayed in bed all day!

3. Amenities

A photo posted by jenaspacio (@jenaspacio) on

Unless we are staycationing in a cooler place like Tagaytay or Baguio, or overseas, our family will always book in a place with a pool. There's nothing like having fun while having a full body workout and we all can make use of cooling off from the scorching heat we are offered almost the whole year in the tropics.

If you happen to no fancy swimming, the Fitness Center at the Level 1 is fully equipped with treadmills, weights, steppers and stationary bikes. And it's open 24 hours. We had the Fitness Center all to ourselves during our visit.

4. DreamPlay

DreamPlay is the world's first family entertainment center from Hollywood Studio DreamWorks Animation, that features education-based, interactive entertainment with its idea of kids learning best through play.

It occupies over 2,400 sqm and features DreamWorks' beloved characters integrated in the games and activity offerings, catering to children from 6 to 12 years old. I wasn't anywhere close to that age, but I sure did love my time within the theme park.

Our son with Kung Fu Panda

5. The Cafe

Located at the left of the lobby is The Cafe, where vibrant live cooking and buffet stations await guests who are in for the feast of their lifetime.

Although ala carte is available, I highly recommend that you avail of the buffet service hours where live culinary theatre is performed by experienced chefs.

The range of food offerings at The Cafe:

  • Italian: pasta, pizza and Italian favorites
  • The Grill and Griddle: carvery, grill, teppan griddle, satay, kebab, yakitori
  • The Deli: sushi, sashimi, charcuteries, pates and cheeses, salads, bread varieties and terrines, chilled seafood.
  • The Asian: dimsum, barbeque, wok, noodles and rice
  • The Comfort and Favorites: tempura, pancackes, waffles, crepes, halo-halo, pastries, cakes, baked goodies

What I loved best about the Cafe is their use of fresh and authentic ingredients. They cook their food offerings from scratch! Health buffs need not feel out of place! The chefs will willingly cook your request using Gluten-Free pasta or pizza.

Our family truly enjoyed the quick Hyatt City of Dreams Manila getaway. Thank you Hyatt CDO, for inviting us!

The country's longest running monthly food publication, Cook Magazine recently celebrated it's 16th year with an evening of merriment, entertainment and prizes. Led by Cook Magazine Advertising Manager Marlon Aldenese and his team, the yearly party dubbed "Holiday Bash" was again a coming together of advertisers, subscribers, contributors, chefs and friends - everyone who has made Cook what it is today.

The event also served as an opportunity to launch Cook's new baby for 2017 - the Business Mirror Cook Saturday Edition. Put to print in November 2016, the new insert in Business Mirror comes out every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. Created to cater to a new audience, Business Mirror Cook Saturday Edition aims to share recipes, restaurant finds and everything food-related to the core readers of Business Mirror, top executives and business leaders. Food has become more about the experience and entertainment than just sustenance, filling social media with posts of "Instagrammable" food pics. This hasn't come unnoticed, even for those at the top of the economic pyramid. Quoting Cook Magazine Editor-in-Chief, Chef Dino Datu: "Everyone has got to eat, even the busiest of executives. We'd like to give them ideas on what's new and what's good, suggest a few recipes to those who like to tinker around in the kitchen on weekends." T. One of the best things about the holiday bash is that COOK Magazine’s columnists and featured guests have a chance to showcase their food, making it a truly foodie affair. Chef Winston Luna, who runs a column about the business of food, runs Chefwix Catering. He served  Corn and Carrot Supreme, Hainan Fish with Ginger Sauce, Buffalo Chicken Fillet in Ranch Dipping Sauce, and Indonesian Pork BBQ Spareribs. Dessert and Baking columnists Chef Jojo Cuesta Javier and Chef Edward Mateo made their signature cakes and pastries.

Chef Johann Dagandara of Johanns Cuisine came all the way from Ozamis City, Misamis Occidental, and gave Manila a glimpse of his province’s gustatory delights like Pata Ham, a dish where the meat is braised in a mixture of pineapple juice, soy sauce and brown sugar; Baked Torta, a dish of ground pork with melted cheese; Native Chicken Adobo, the Ozamis  take on adobo using native chicken and locally made vinegar; Laya is a fish that is endemic to the province is served with tomatoes, onions and tausi; and the very popular  Dragon Fruit Ice-Cream.  Apag Marangle, the emerging authentic Kapampangan Restaurant from Sta. Rita, Pampanga served their version of Pork Humba, Kare-Kare, Apag Marangle Signature Pancit, Fried Hito and Mustasa with Buru, and from their sister company Flappers Wings, with their Original Hot & Spicy Flappers and Open Faced Tostados.  Aging’s Food Delight served their always-in-demand kakanin, and the ever delightful Aging’s crew even brought a cotton candy machine as a nod to the theme’s “Sweet 16” Anniversary.  The Best Value Factory Food Outlet brought an ice cream machine to churn, churn, churn a lot of soft serve.  Lydia’s Lechon and King Sue were the kings of the carving table with lechon and Bone-in Ham, respectively.  Resorts World Manila provided the cold and hot canapés (Spinach and Three Cheese Quiche, Sticky Honey Glazed Sausages with Sweet Mustard Sauce, Morocan Fish Skewers, Calamari Fritters, Pimiento and Cheese Croquette), Aglio e Olio e Sarde, and Apple Strudel.

The 6th Holiday Bash gave away loads of prizes such as home appliances, kitchen gadgets, Hotel and Restaurant Buffet GCs, Kitchen Gadgets. Prizes were also awarded to those who came in their best enchanted finery and creative social media posts relating to the event.

COOK Magazine, on its 16th year remains as strong as ever, expanding its reach and continues to bring people together through food.

    Midas Tree Lighting Ceremony 2016

Midas Hotel and Casino officially embraced the season blossoming of love, happiness, and giving with its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony held at the hotel’s designer lobby. The Midas holiday tree is decked with brisk mint green, gold, and silver accents of Christmas trinkets and ornaments that glow with the joy of the occasion. The ginger bread houses and Christmas train packed full of Yuletide savories also reckon with the astounding spirit of the holidays.

More than the fabulous decors and festivities, Midas rekindle the very meaning of the celebration with efforts in giving support to San Lorenzo Ruiz Home for the Elderly of the Little Sisters of the Poor. In this initiative, part of the proceeds of Midas holiday offerings will go to the congregation. The event was made even more meaningful with the presence of our dear grandpas and grandmas, delighted over the captivating performance of “The Nutcracker” by Ballet Philippines.

Midas General Manager Ms. Lily Santos-Adrid graced the lighting of the tree with Little Sisters of the Poor’s Sister Rosario Antoinette and Lola Carmelita Marcelo. The grandiose 18-foot tree sparkles with a spectacle of lights while the Las Piñas Boys Choir complements with the soulful voices of Mr. Joey Bautista and the Hexagon Band as they serenade the guests with classic familiar carols and well-loved Christmas melodies. Indeed, the celebration enlivens Ms. Adrid’s welcoming words, as to quote, “Midas Christmas holds the true spirit of the season that is love and compassion.” Thus sending off the night with a Merry Midas Christmas!

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.

With the holidays fast approaching, everyone seems to be ever so busy ticking off each and every item on their Christmas shopping list. I know I am! If you are like our family, we rather would really do away with the mall crowd. It has, for us, become so tiring to go about the mall rush especially at this time of the year. And please don't let me get started with the traffic.

This is why more and more people are choosing to shop for Groupon Goods nowadays. We don't just save on gas and time, I also get that bang for our buck! I don't know about you but value for money has always been on top of our list.
